The band saw is one of the popular handyman power tools that can be used for a variety of purposes. It is ideal for woodwork projects and especially those plans that require curved cuts. You can make all kinds of wooden equipment with this power tool because band saws can do very immaculate curve cutting. Other uses of the band saw might include cutting of tenons and rabbets that are smaller in size. It can also be used to rip stock pieces. Another use of the band saw is in sawing away large pieces of wood into thinner strips. But of course, buying the right band saw is the first step towards creating a really amazing project. Here are some tips for buying used bandsaw:The two major kinds of band saws available in the market are cabinet models which require floor standing and the second type of units are shorter and require a stand or bench top for mounting. If you are using the band saw for a more commercial project and doing some professional work than you might be better off buying a cabinet model. But if you are a home based wood worker looking to work on smaller projects than a smaller unit will be more feasible for your work. You can even get really professional results from the smaller units if you know how to work the band saw properly.
Another aspect you need to keep in mind when you are buying a band saw is to figure out the depth of cut of the band saw. This is typically the distance from the table towards the upper blade guides. But since a band saw with more depth of cut is expensive, you can also get a shorter one and add a riser which will make about six inches difference to the over all depth. This is especially good for re-sawing and cutting through thicker stock.
Other things to consider are the size of motors which can be determined by figuring out whether you will be doing more professional projects that require bigger motors or home based ones for which a standard motor will suffice.
